RUNNING IS FOR EVERYONE.

RUNNING IS FOR EVERYONE.

At the Running Industry Diversity Coalition, our mission is to unite the running industry to improve inclusion, visibility, and access for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC).

Trail running offers more than physical endurance—it cultivates mindfulness, connection to nature, and a deep sense of belonging in the outdoors. Communities of color have long been part of this story, finding joy, purpose, and peace in outdoor spaces, from walking wooded hills with family to running along neighborhood trails or desert landscapes. Yet, within the running and outdoor industries, these stories and identities have often gone unseen.

This case study is a learning opportunity for those shaping the running and outdoor space—brands, retailers, race directors, and run club leaders—offering tangible insights into how inclusive practices, programming, and representation can transform participation. The findings presented here are an invitation to expand what trail running looks like and who it’s for—because the outdoors has always been for everyone.
