Freedom to Run: Back Outside

Building A New Path Into Trail Running

Freedom to Run: Back Outside is RIDC’s intro-to-trail running initiative, created to help break down barriers and open new pathways for more runners to explore the outdoors.

Within 10 days of announcing the program, nearly 275 people applied. Fourteen were selected to take their first steps onto the trails with coaching, gear, community support, and preparation for their first trail race.

Alongside the program, we developed two resources for runners and the industry: a case study sharing lessons from the initiative and a practical toolkit for aspiring trail runners and those working to welcome more people into trail running.

Both resources build on insights from RIDC’s 2023 Racial Diversity in Trail Running study and explore a central question: how do we help more people see themselves as trail runners?

“This program has allowed me to become closer to my community, build deeper roots in my city, and connect in a way that I haven’t with the people in my life.”

“Being in this program connected me with other BIPOC runners who shared their stories and journeys online, which I wouldn’t have been exposed to otherwise.”
