Freedom to Run: Back Outside
Building a New Path Into Trail Running
Freedom to Run: Back Outside is RIDC’s first dedicated trail running program, created to break down systemic barriers and open new pathways for BIPOC runners to explore the outdoors. Selected from over 275 applicants, 14 runners are taking their first steps onto the trail with us—part of a national movement to increase access, representation, and long-term participation in trail running.
Built on insights from RIDC’s Racial Diversity in Trail Running study, this program expands the conversation: How do we help more BIPOC individuals see themselves as trail runners? By tackling real challenges—like safety, access, gear, and belonging—Freedom to Run: Back Outside offers practical tools, a supportive community, and visible representation to help new runners feel seen, prepared, and welcome on the trails.
