Back Outside: DC Recap: A Celebration of Community and Trail Culture

On Saturday, September 13, 2025, the Running Industry Diversity Coalition (RIDC), in partnership with Altra and REI, brought the energy to Washington, DC with Back Outside: DC. The event gathered runners, walkers, and community members for a day of movement, learning, and connection—all focused on making trail running more accessible to BIPOC communities.

The morning kicked off with a choice of a 3- or 5-mile walk/run along DC’s trails. All paces and experience levels were welcomed, and participants proved that trail running truly is for everyone. Following the routes, attendees enjoyed free coffee, a hearty breakfast, and the chance to connect with local running groups and new friends.

One of the highlights of the day was the panel discussion on exploring trail running, moderated by Alison Mariella Désir. Panelists Anthony Loui (AAPI 5K), Fred Irby (Juneteenth Marathon), Jordan Marie Brings Three White Horses Whetstone (Rising Hearts), and Wil J White (Black Men Run, BMR TURF Trail Ambassador) shared powerful stories about breaking barriers, building community, and reimagining the trails as inclusive spaces.

The event also featured exciting giveaways, running gear raffles, and opportunities for participants to leave with both resources and inspiration to continue their trail journeys.

Another exciting moment was the launch of the RIDC Intro to Trail Running Toolkit, a resource designed to help make trail running more welcoming and inclusive. The toolkit is available for run clubs, coaches, and teams to use as they encourage more diverse participation on the trails.

The Trail Running Toolkit Can Be Used To:

  • Plan inclusive trail runs that welcome all experience levels and backgrounds.

  • Offer coaching guidance on how to introduce new runners to trail running safely and confidently.

  • Build community connections by partnering with local organizations and BIPOC-led groups.

  • Educate athletes on gear, safety, and accessibility considerations for trail running.

  • Foster leadership by equipping captains, coaches, and mentors with tools to create supportive environments.

Back Outside: DC was more than just a run—it was a movement to ensure that trails feel like home for everyone. RIDC is proud to have created this space and looks forward to building on this momentum with future events across the country.
